Where does the word “Bible” come from, and what does it actually mean?
The Bible is the very Word of God and makes clear the ways to peace, hope, and salvation. It tells us how the world began, how it will end, and how we are to live in the meantime.
The Bible is the world’s most fascinating book and the best-selling book of all time and is widely considered to be some of the perfect literature ever written. It has been translated into numerous languages and is the foundation of modern laws and ethics. It disciplines us, guides us through difficult circumstances, it gives us wisdom, and has been the foundation of faith for centuries of believers. Bible influenced many people and still influencing many .So today I’m going to talk about .
So where does the word “Bible” come from, and what does it actually mean?
The Bible takes its name from the Latin Biblia (‘book’ or ‘books’) which comes from the Greek Ta Biblia (‘the books’) traced to the Phoenician port city of Gebal, known as Byblos to the Greeks. Writing and books became associated with Byblos because it was an exporter of papyrus (used in writing) and the Greek name for papyrus was bublos, the Greeks likely took the name of this city and adapted it to create their word for book. Many familiar words such as bibliography, bibliophile, library, and even bibliophobia (fear of books) are based on the same Greek root word.
We Christian use of the term can be traced to c. 223 CE. The biblical scholar F.F. Bruce notes that Chrysostom appears to be the first writer (in his Homilies on Matthew, delivered between 386 and 388) to use the Greek phrase ta biblia (“the books”) to describe both the Old and New Testaments together.
